While I wouldn’t say he was English speaking, we were able to communicate easily with google translate and he was very friendly. Tom was extremely helpful, happy to answer any questions and enjoyed telling a story and making a joke. Our stops along the way were appropriately timed and very worthwhile. Water was provided and Tom ran out and purchased everyone lunch (Peanut-butter on a Bahn roll), delicious. I would suggest bringing extra water and snacks along with you.
